Until 1971, Turtuk was part of Baltistan, an area within Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. Following border shifts during the Indo-Pak conflict, Turtuk became Indian territory, forever altering the lives, memories, and cultural landscape of its people.
Despite the political divide, the Balti identity endures - woven into the village’s customs, stories, and architecture. Once a thriving stop along the Silk Route, and later a witness to dynastic rule and the Kargil War, Turtuk remained hidden from the world until 2010, when it opened its doors to travelers.

Sustainably built using Ladakhi vernacular architecture, Virsa is a collaboration of over 200 artisans and 100+ locally sourced, non-machine materials. Every element of the hotel echoes the legacy of traditional Balti homes, merging past traditions with present-day luxury.
